Granite Countertops—Add Some Relection To Your Countertop With The Mineral Mica

From time to time, we get asked questions about the mineral composition of granite, from customers who visit our showroom. Granite is composed of a variety of minerals including quartz, feldspar, hornblend, mica, and sometimes other minerals, depending on the color. In this blog, I wanted to focus on the mineral, mica, which gives some granites their reflective properties.

Mica is a mineral that can take several forms including biotite and muscovite and is found in many stones. While mica is known for its mirror/reflective properties, it is also known to split easily into transparent sheets and can sometimes flake.

There are many granites that contain mica, but some colors have more prominent areas of the mineral than others, giving the stone a unique look. Many consumers are attracted to stones with large areas of mica because they appear vibrant, especially in direct light. Some granites with lots of mica have blue or green reflective areas that may appear to change color. Other granites with mica often appear to have a silver, or sometimes gold sparkle to them, making them quite elegant.

Let’s take a look at a few granites containing mica…
